Ted hung up the phone and relayed the astonishing news that our long time insurance company of over 20 years was not going to insure the farm. He was told organic farming, "is too much of a liability" and "it's not something we do", though they do insure conventional farms.
Too much of a liability? What about all the recent reports of E. Coli and other dangerous bacteria contamination in the conventional farming world? It seems almost every month we read of some recent outbreak among conventional produce, feed-lot beef or pasteurized milk. Don't they understand that organic farming doesn't employ the chemicals sprayed on produce, the unhealthy diets feed to animals and the unnecessary killing of good bacteria in dairy products?
"It's not something we do", (i.e. - it's too new and risky) - don't they know that organic food has seen astronomical growth in the last few years, with no end in sight as to the demand. As the quality of conventional food decreases, the demand for healthy organic food increases. In fact, the demand has grown so much over the past 5 years, that we feel this market will only continue to grow as more and more consumers turn to organic, pastured and raw foods for safety and quality.
So the next time you see the higher price of organic foods, please remember that the "system" is not geared for your health, or for making an economical choice for organic food growers. Not only did our insurance company lose some long time good customers, we lost the benefit of a lower cost to us.
