We're in blueberry picking season (not to mention blackberries and dewberries too!) and I didn't have to ask twice this morning to get my 3 sons ready to go pick blueberries!
I've been looking for an organic farm to pick blueberries ever since we moved back to Texas in 2004, and haven't located one. After our move to east Texas, we saw a sign for a blueberry farm and it advertised, "No spray". It was worth checking out...which I did and to my pleasant surprise found out they have been organic for the past 2 years. Yipee! The best part....they are less than 20 minutes away from our place!
Twin Oaks Blueberry Farm is located outside Commerce on Hwy 50. It is owned and run by a sweet older couple, Jean and Joe. They are so friendly and nice...and understand children! When we went last weekend, Jean told the boys they could eat as they picked. I put a handle on it...thinking she doesn't know how much they could eat! Today we met her husband, Joe. He came out to the row of bushes where we were picking and introduced himself. He also told the boys they could eat as they picked, but added, you DON'T eat them singly....you EAT THEM BY THE HANDFULLS! I thought, we'll NEVER get home with any! But we did manage to do our fair share, coming home with over 6 gallons today (got over 4 gallons last weekend).
I save quite a bit to eat fresh, but I quickly got to work freezing them for our wonderful berry shakes we have each morning. Tonight, after all the boys had gone to bed, I thought....I wonder what it does taste like to eat a whole handful...(Joe explained that way the not-so-sweet ones get mixed up with the sweet ones in your mouth and they all taste good
). I tried it....Joe's way. You really need to own the blueberry patch to do this...they are ADDICTIVE!
