When city folk move out to the country to live the "country life" and grow their own food, there comes a time when you quit imitating being country and you become country. When does that happen? It's hard to say, but there are definite steps along the way.
We encountered one of those definite steps last week with the purchase of our first ever tractor. It's a lovely old Ford Model 9N from the 1940's, that has been kept in excellent condition. We didn't know much about buying a tractor, except we knew we didn't need a big one and certainly didn't have the money for a new one. In fact, we weren't even sure we needed one...going back and forth between buying a tractor or a horse. We'll probably wind up with both
, just to please everyone in the family.
Well, as it turns out with both our pickup and tractor purchases, I happened to have found both. Ever since we knew we were buying the farm, we've been scouting out used equipment. Once you start looking, people have used items for sale everywhere! This particular tractor was sitting by the side of the road in a VERY small town that I travel through going back to Denton. Since I knew Ted was interested in purchasing a tractor, I called him on the cell phone and told him about this one I had just seen. I didn't even stop for the phone number or price on this one. He went over later and talked with the owner, a very nice older farmer...then he called me on the phone to discuss the deal. Later that day, we became the owners of a tractor.
We took possession a few days later when the farmer delivered our tractor. You should have heard the whoopin' and hollerin' that went on between the boys! They were just as excited as Ted was!
Are we "farmers" yet? Well, we have the land in the country with some beautiful rye grass and wildflowers growing in the pasture, we have a pickup, we have a tractor....we're working on the garden
, and getting some animals is getting closer. Step-by-step it's getting closer.
